Introduction
The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) Youth Leader Fund for a World Without Nuclear Weapons is an innovative learning program designed to empower the next generation of global advocates for nuclear disarmament. The initiative provides young leaders with essential knowledge, practical skills, and networking opportunities to actively contribute to global peace and security efforts.
This initiative invites youth aged 18-29 from all nationalities to participate in an interactive online training course, culminating in a fully-funded study visit to Hiroshima and Nagasaki for 50 selected participants. The program offers an immersive experience, engaging with disarmament experts, think tanks, civil society organizations, and hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors).
Program Structure
1. Online Training Component (4 Months)
The program begins with an interactive, self-paced online course that includes:
- eLearning modules on nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control.
- Live webinars with experts.
- Skill-building workshops and practical assignments.
- Weekly commitment: Approximately 4-6 hours.
- No prior knowledge required.
2. In-Person Study Tour to Hiroshima and Nagasaki (6 Days, Fully Funded)
Upon successful completion of the online phase, 50 outstanding participants will be selected for a fully funded study tour to Japan. The tour includes:
- Meetings with hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors).
- Engagement with local youth and experts in disarmament.
- Participation in a youth-led event on nuclear disarmament.
- Accommodation, travel, and subsistence costs covered.
3. Impactful Community Projects
Participants will collaborate to design awareness initiatives and advocacy campaigns, promoting nuclear disarmament in their home countries.
4. Mentorship for Future Cohorts
Graduates will have the opportunity to mentor the next batch of Youth Leaders, ensuring continued engagement and impact.
